This is a very long overdue update! A lot has happened since our last post. As many of you are aware, our pilot study finished in June. Out total enrollment was 41/45 patients with a consent rate of 87%! (see Study Progress for more details). We are now submitting an application for funding of the full study to CIHR as part of the National Transplant Research Network. As an update, the deadline for this application was moved from Oct 17th to December 1st. Will we let you know the results of this application as soon as we find out, hopefully early in the new year.

In addition, members of the DDePICt Research Group presented two abstracts (in the form of posters) at the Canadian Critical Care Forum at the end of October and the poster presented by Loretta Norton won the prize for best clinical poster!!!  Congrats to Loretta and the whole group from London. The titles of the presented abstracts are:

Pilot Study for the Determination of Death After Cardiac Arrest
Sonny Dhanani, MD FRCPC; Laura Hornby, MSc; Roxanne Ward RN, BA (Psy); Sam Shemie, MD FRCPC for the DDePICt Investigator Group, the Critical Care Trials Group, and the Loeb Research Consortium in Organ and Tissue Donation

Electroencephalogram Activity During Withdrawal of Life Sustaining Therapy
Loretta Norton, MSc, PhD(C); Carolyn Benson, MD; Sonny Dhanani, MD FRCPC; Laura Hornby, MSc; Roxanne Ward RN, BA (Psy);Sam Shemie, MD FRCPC; G. Bryan Young, MD FRCPC for the DDePICt Investigator Group, the Critical Care Trials Group, and the Loeb Research Consortium in Organ and Tissue Donation

As well, plenary presentations by Sonny Dhanani and Sam Shemie  at the same meeting were very well received. The titles are as follows:

Defining Death
Moderators: T. Stewart – JL Vincent
Concepts of Death Determination – A Canadian WHO Consensus – S. Shemie
A Prospective Study of Physiology & Vital Signs After Withdrawal of Life Support in the ICU – S. Dhanani

Finally, the manuscript for the pilot study is in preparation as is a second manuscript (Jane Chambers-Evans, first author) which focuses on the ethical aspects related to the design and implementation of the pilot study.

More exciting news to come!!!
